Your Device!

Last year I was at a conference and listened to a talk from Seth Godin. In his talk he said asked a question that stuck with me. If we give our 3-year-old children an iPad or a tablet, are we creating an addiction that will haunt them the rest of their lives? Expanding on that thought we can argue that technology is a tool that can expand the mind of our children. In some sense this is true, but we could also be robbing them of the ability to be creative and resourceful. Sure, we can be very creative on a device but if the default is to play games and watch movies or social media, aren’t we creating an addiction to a device rather than developing healthy relationships with others? How much time do you spend on your device? How much time do I spend on my device? I get called out on this all the time! I think we need to be proactively engaged getting to know other people. I have 3 tips to help you in the new year, I intend to practice these three.

Number one is to leave my personal device in my car when I dine. We all see the couple or family that eat looking at their devices. Leave your device in your locked car and make it a priority to focus on your dinner guests.

Number two is to turn off your device when you walk in your home after a busy day at work. Plug it in and let it charge for the next day. You have done enough for the day. Your mind needs the break and your family needs and wants your attention.

Finally, never go to a meeting (especially if you are in sales) with your personal device. I believe vibrating devices are as distracting as devices that are ringing, buzzing or binging. The temptation to look at the device and the obvious distraction is disruptive and unneeded.

I hope these quick tips impact your day in a positive way. I intend to have them impact mine!
