Are you a Leader?

It never really dawned on me what effective leadership was until I experienced ineffective leadership. That so-called Leader that is living in a “want to be” fantasy land. Ineffective leaders are those that cannot influence anyone around them because of hidden agendas or power hungry ideas.

This Leader tells you they are in charge and you had better follow their instruction. That same person is always concerned about who is going to challenge them next or get in their way. The company atmosphere becomes nerve racking or even filled with a spirit of fear. The company leadership team becomes a revolving door with short lived tenure. I would not want to be their HR executive!

How about the so-called leader that is always working their own agenda? It’s not really a team effort, it is all about what is in it for them. They work through situations for the good of “self” and not the team. This atmosphere can become a sticky wicket because the perpetrator can hide the hidden agenda for long periods of time. It is often difficult to identify and is even harder to call out the guilty party or parties.

Both scenarios can be disastrous for a company regardless of size. It is best to address the problem head on and remove the ineffective leader(s). Once that is accomplished find that person that will be an effective team leader. What characteristics do they have?

  • They naturally bring life to the team

  • They have discernment capabilities

  • They are trustworthy

  • They are self-assured

  • They are confident

  • They are a problem solver

  • They are helpful

  • They share achievement

  • They build up others

  • They are honorable

  • They are gracious to everyone

Leadership is positive influence from a person you genuinely like. They are in their position to help their team be successful. It is not about them, it is about us! An effective leader will naturally attract the team to them because of their servant leadership. The team is going to be supportive because their leader supports them.

How does your Leadership stack up? Your team is only as good as the person leading the way!
