Delegate to Elevate
Delegate to Elevate
I was asked the other day how I can be so trusting in delegating tasks to other people. I believe that delegation is the single most important duty of a business executive. To be able to focus your attention on the 20% of your clients or work that brings in 80% of your revenue, we must be able to let go of tasks that distract from that goal. If we get caught up in the tasks that have no end goal or importance who loses? You do!
When we delegate certain tasks to our team it not only elevates you but also the team member working with you. The trust you place on them elevates their self-perception and significance in the company. Delegation will help develop leaders and leadership within your organization. It truly is a win-win.
Several years ago, my sons asked me what me the plan was for selling the company. It always was an underlying assumption I would sell to them. However, it was not solidified or formally planned. I gave them a time line of five years and then challenged them to work me out of a job. I was working as an Account Manager at the time with the largest book of work (over 1M). Through delegation they slowly but methodically reduced my book of work till they could say, “Dad, that is done what is the next step”? When we want to think no one else can do our job, I can argue from experience that is not true.
My suggestion to all my Coaching clients is to monitor their activities each quarter and delegate the tasks that could be effectively done by another team member. Then focus on the 20% that will propel you to the next level. You will get further than ever imagined and will look back and say, “How did I get here?” Delegate to Elevate!
